YOUR FASHION DESIGNER NAME (First word you see on your left / Favorite restaurant)
(You know, I can’t even remember the name of my favorite restaurant in America. It’s a breakfast/lunch-only place in McMinnville. I remember everything else about it: the eclectic art collection, the best stuff on the menu, the long-haired waitress—but what the hell was its name?)
Curry Cuernavaca
EXOTIC FOREIGNER ALIAS (Favorite Spice / Foreign Vacation Spot)
CC Portland
SOCIALITE ALIAS (Silliest Childhood Nickname / Town Where You First Partied
S. Ken
"FLY Girl" ALIAS (a la J. Lo)(First Initial / First Two or Three Letters of your Last Name):

Nevada Foxtail
SOAP OPERA ALIAS (Middle Name / Street Where You Live)
I have no middle name so I'm using "Nevada" which is the middle name my friends "gave" me in elementary school. In Japan I don’t know the street I live on. It doesn't have a name, it’s just “an area.” The last street I lived on in Oregon was Foxtail, though.
You do it too, and post it in my comments section!!

Erotic Pink
I just realized I didn’t change my rice cooker to the “brown rice” setting before I started it. I hope it doesn’t matter.
I’ve been so busy this last week—both in and out of school. I’ve been completely neglecting all my emails and lesson planning until the MINUTE before class. I don’t even know what I’ve been doing to stay so busy, but I guess Mama and I wanted to squeeze everything in before she left, and consequently all my… I was going to say “plans” before I realized I don’t have them—then I thought about saying “responsibilities” and again, don’t have ‘em. So… what? All my… issues, errands, tasks, duties? The stuff I do on a daily basis has been piling up. Some of it blogging, some of it cleaning, some of it organizing and paying bills, voting, taxes, you know, that stuff has been piling up.
My apartment is a train wreck. It’s so disorderly that I just can’t live like this anymore. The motivation to really clean it, however, is…
I'M GETTING NEW TATAMI MATS!!!
Next week. A complete new set!
Why is this so exciting? I don’t even know. I don’t really even need them, and I hear they mold a lot when they are new. Hatakeyama is going to teach me how to clean and care for them, but he says I’ll know when they are moldy. It grows fast.
I love tatami—especially the smell of new tatami, but I don’t want to deal with the mold. Is it going to be gross?
This is particularly getting to me because I’m getting the sense that the rainy season is coming. And I don’t think I’m ready for it. June is the height of the rainy season and I'm told everything is wet. All the time.
Today in school, I watched Miyamoto-san pull out the paper dryer. It’s like a little filing cabinet with a built in heater. They have to store all the paper in it so it stays dry and will go through the copy machine one at a time. The paper we use at school is recycled—no, not like “America recycles—“ it’s thin like newsprint and darker too. It LOOKS like it’s been recycled. I don't know how America recycles paper, but it certainly doesn’t look like it is after seeing Japanese recycled paper.
(The rice is done. It looks like it turned out fine. I know you were worried.)
So, rainy reason means the paper heaters come out of the closet. This may be a more intense season then I expected. I should stock up on dehumidifiers now.
And my mom thought my bathroom smelled musty now! Ha! Just wait!
I saw my first mucade of the year today. I was leaving school and a little centipede was squirming along near the outside door. I wasn’t sure if it was a mucade—which are a big fuss here because they are poisonous—so I asked a student and he said yes, it was. I went back to the staffroom to tell a teacher and Fukuno-sensei comes out with his exacto knife and chops off it’s head. I couldn’t believe it. I guess once the head is detached from the body, it’s not going to bite anyone—but it still wiggled and wormed around for a long time afterward. They swept it into a dust pan and dumped the body and the head out the window.
I’m reading these two books Mama left for me written by Covert Bailey. The titles are “The Fit or Fat Target Diet” and “The Fit or Fat Woman.” I hate the word “diet” because it comes with so much negative baggage, but I have to accept that that single word covers everything from the food that a person or animal usually consumes to controlling the intake of food and drink for weight loss purposes. These books are about food and how to keep a healthy diet and exercise regime, so I guess the titles are fitting. (Ha! No pun intended!)
They are very interesting and motivational books. I’m actually quite familiar with "the target” designed by Bailey because Harald used to have it hanging on the wall at the head of his bed. I always enjoyed looking at it—it’s an interesting approach to “the healthy foods” according to this one man. Because Harald thought he had some good ideas, and I think Harald is about the healthiest person I have ever known, I have a lot of respect for it immediately. I hadn’t ever read the books, just studied the target while lying in Harald’s bed, but the books are funny and interesting. I’m learning a lot about foods, vitamins, the way the body processes everything and exercise science.
…And I thought I knew everything already! =)
So, reading the books has helped me make some wise decisions recently. I’ve been back to the gym after a couple weeks off when Mama was here. Tanabe asked me yesterday if I was on “yasumi,” which can be either break or vacation. I said I was busy with my mom, but that he would see me more often again. Today I ran and even started lifting weights again. Ryohei was in the gym too and he helped me with a few new strategies. I also found out that Tanabe has a girlfriend! Yikes! For about six months too!! So, I’m not too surprised we haven’t ever had that bowl of ramen. And my sources had CONFIRMED he didn’t have a girlfriend! I’ll have to remember to double-source in the future!
Did you know pink is considered an erotic color in Japan? Today, while reading… ha, ha, I mean “looking at” the newspaper in the staffroom I saw some advertising and there was a pink bike on sale. I pointed at it and said to Koichiro, “Koichiro, buy me this pink bike!” Then he said something in Japanese—he rarely uses English in the staffroom, I’ve noticed—and I swear I heard the word “erotic” in his sentence. Hatakeyama-sensei translates, “He says you’re always wearing and wanting things in erotic pink.” And I said, “Yeah, I like it. My futon sheets are pink too.” Well, I didn’t realize pink was erotic (although actually, I feel like I have heard this before) but I’m glad Koichiro has noticed.
Remember how I’m in charge of collecting money and paying for the Nice Day bento boxes every month? Until this month, all I’ve done is handed the money to Takada-sensei and he does something and gets a receipt somehow and then he gives the receipt to me. HOWEVER, this month, he said, “Do it yourself.” I assumed he was “in charge” of accounts or something which is why I had to give the money to him, but I guess he just lives closer to Nice Day then the previous people who had this job and took the money to them as a favor.
So my Nice Day responsibilities get bigger still! I’m so happy! He taught me how to say everything so I’d get a receipt. “Nakagoto koko no bentodai. Ryoshusho kudasai.” Then he made me repeat it several times so I didn’t have to look at a piece of paper when I said it. So basically I’m in charge of the whole shit and sha-bang at Nice Day. The fact that Takada-sensei is the one who trusted me with this responsibility is even more flattering. I think deep down there somewhere in that big heart of his he REALLY does like me a lot more than he’s willing to admit.
Today’s payday. Hatakeyama, his wife and daughter are all in TDL. (That stands for Tokyo Disneyland, but he makes me abbreviate it ‘cause no one’s supposed to know he's gone. Heaven forbidden he takes ONE DAY OFF TO VACATION WITH HIS FAMILY!!!)
Must get rest so I'm strong for karate tomorrow!
Love,
Sierra
